Lackland is the nation's basic military center for all new Air Force recruits. Every enlisted trainee completes their basic training at Lackland, making it one of the busiest military training installations in the country.
Lackland AFB is one of just four worldwide basic training centers for the Air Force and
many Air Force tenant corps make the base their home, including training corps units like
the 314th military intelligence battalion, the 37th training support squadron and the
807th mission support group.
Lackland Air Force Base is also home to the Defense Language Institute's English Language Center and an Inter-American Air Forces academy for both English and Spanish speaking students. History of Lackland AFB -Established in 1941, Lackland Air Force Base didn't become the center of major Air Force training operations until 1966. The base went through another phase of changes during the late 1960's and 1970's, with most changes affecting the military training and housing facilities as well as the addition of expanded recreational facilities.

Basic Training at Lackland AFB -Lackland AFB offers the only basic training program for new Air Force military recruits in the country. Enlisted military recruits are enrolled in basic training, which is offered to active duty Air Force, Air Force reserve and National Guard troops and organized into several basic training squadrons, each with a designated training site on the base. Physical readiness, anti-terrorism tactics and other military training protocol are standard during the six-week basic training program.
Advanced Technical Training at Lackland AFB -The Air Education and Training Command at Lackland trains enlisted airmen and women who have completed their basic training program. Explicit Air Force specialties are offered at six technical training squadron curriculums and unique technology school programs at the base.
Visitor Tours at Lackland Air Force Base -Once open to public visitors at all times, today Lackland Air Force Base only allows non-military guests on the base during specified monthly, guided tours only available on the second Tuesday of each month. Visitors can tour the Gateway Historical Collection, Lackland's collection of photos and documents documenting the history of both Kelly AFB and Lackland as well as the traditions of military aviation in San Antonio.
